Guest Houses

Generally there are two variations of paying guest house:

• Home converted guest house
• Professionally run guest house with all necessary amenities and staff

When revering to this type of accommodation offered in South Africa we have found three variation of the way it is referred to:

Guesthouse: – one word

Guest-house: – split with a Hyphen

Guest House: – two separate words

In some parts of the world guest houses are a type of inexpensive hotel-like lodging. Guest house accommodation is typically owner operated, offers a room as well as breakfast with staff not available 24/7, ranging from a purpose-built guest house to family-based Bed&Breakfast.

Larger than ‘bed and breakfast’ accommodation, typically offering breakfast included in room rate but not always licensed to serve alcoholic beverages. Guest houses range from low-budget rooms to luxury apartments, and tend to be like small hotels in larger cities.

South Africa has plenty of accommodation options for visitors in all the major cities as well as towns. Almost all roads between major cities and town you will find accommodation. There are thousands of guest houses, self-catering accommodations, and hotels.

Can be an existing home, a renovated home or a building that has been specifically designed as a residential dwelling to provide overnight accommodation, must have more than three rooms and public areas for the exclusive use of its guests.
